There are legends of Black Dogs - The Grim, Hairy Jack or Skriker all over England. Most are terrifying hellhounds that burst into churches, murder all who he touches, leaving clawmarks burnt into heavy wooden doors.
But some versions of the tail show Black Shuck guiding women through dangerous paths. This print shows him frolicking through the undergrowth, perhaps listening out for someone who has lost their way.
